Frequently Asked Questions Which subjects and levels do you teach? How much do you charge for tuition? Our rates of tuition depend on the level of tuition required and are set out in the table below. Discounts are normally available for small group tutorials (see question 12). Do you have any tutors in my local area? Most of our tutors are based in Oxfordshire and Berkshire, covering a region roughly from Berinsfield in the north to Goring in the south, and from Childrey in the west to Watlington in the east. However, at present there are a few areas where we are unable to supply home tutors for certain subjects and levels. Will the tutor come to my house? Although it may be possible to arrange this, since April 2020 we have encouraged all of our tutors to provide one-to-one online video conferencing lessons only. This decision was originally taken to protect the health of our students and tutors during the Coronavirus pandemic. We continue to encourage online lessons for operational efficiency purposes and to support our council’s climate action target to become a carbon neutral district by 2030. How long is each lesson? Lessons usually last for one hour, although other lengths of time can often be arranged with the tutor. What time will the lessons be? Lessons normally take place between 3:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, although other times can often be arranged with the tutor. If you let the tutor know the day and time that suits you they will try to reserve that particular slot for you each week or fortnight. When and how do I pay for lessons? Tutors should be paid directly by bank transfer, cheque or cash at the end of each lesson. If you have more than one lesson per week the tutor will usually accept a single payment at the end of the last lesson in each week. Will the tutor set any homework for my child? Tutors normally set a little bit of homework that is related to the work that has been covered in the lesson, although the amount will vary according to each student’s need and the amount of school homework they receive. Do I have to commit to having a certain number of lessons? No, you are free to stop having lessons whenever you like. All we ask is that you give the tutor a minimum of 48 hours’ notice before cancelling any planned lessons. What happens if I need to cancel a planned lesson? If you ever need to cancel a planned lesson you should inform the tutor directly as soon as possible. As long as you give the tutor a minimum of 48 hours’ notice before cancelling any planned lesson you will not have to pay for that lesson. Will I have to pay for any lessons that I cancel? If you give the tutor a minimum of 48 hours’ notice before cancelling any planned lesson you will not have to pay for that lesson. If the period of notice is less than 48 hours you will be expected to pay the full price for that lesson. However, if you have to cancel a lesson at short notice due to illness or injury you will not be expected to pay for that lesson, provided you inform the tutor before they begin their journey to your house or your online lesson is scheduled to commence. Will my child be able to share his/her lessons with a friend? This is possible although we would only recommend it if both children were studying at the same level and wanted tuition for the same subject and topic(s). If you would like another student to share your child’s lessons please let the tutor know well before each lesson so he/she can supply any necessary extra resources. If you arrange for the tutor to see your child and a friend in the same lesson the tutor will usually reduce his/her standard rate of tuition for each student by at least one third (see question 2). Do your tutors work during the school holidays? Our tutors normally work in state school term times only, although lessons during half-term and the school holidays can often be arranged with the tutor. Will the tutor be qualified to teach the subject and level I want? Yes, we only supply qualified tutors who have experience of teaching in a school or college the National Curriculum or the current course specification for their specialist subject. Do you check the suitability of your tutors to work with children? Yes, before all our tutors can register with us they must pass an Enhanced DBS Criminal Records process (formerly CRB check) that checks national records for any relevant allegations, complaints or convictions. What equipment will my child need to bring to the lessons? For most lessons the only equipment your child will need is a pen or pencil and some lined paper on which to take notes. For maths lessons your child should also have a scientific calculator and the usual mathematical instruments (ruler, protractor and a pair of compasses). For KS3, GCSE and A-level lessons it would also be helpful if your child brought along any textbooks, set texts or anthologies that they are currently studying at school. We would also recommend that you buy a box file in which to keep all your child’s work with the tutor.
